Not really. Those old cars were not really efficient to begin with. This may sound bad, but if you have the money, trading it in for a very small used car and making monthly payments may actually be cheaper to deal with rather than feeding that old beast with as much as it will require. But not all is lost, if it has a V8, you may be able to find a V6 for it & that may help, but that too costs money. So, consider what you would spend on an engine and consider using it as a down payment. G’day!
This is true but it may not be nessecary, the first step you’ll need to do is take your vehicle to a qualified ASE certified mechanic have a compresion check done on the engine, you’ll also want the cylinder heads checked by means of a vacum gauge your mechanic will know what these checks are when you mention them once you have established that the engine is mechanicaly sound have your mechanic start with replacing all the vacum hoses they are cheap and can make a world of difference when it comes to gas milage as well as drivability then move to the sparkplugs, wires, distributorcap, coil, and of course a oil & filter change. Your next step will be the transmission and rear end the oil & filter in your vehicles transmission & rear end is probally just as old as the car itself so you’ll want to have them both changed as well the clutch bands need to be checked for slippage and dont forget to have the transmissions modulators looked at just as a percautionary measure. Now all of this wont do you much good if the suspension and tires all not uo to speed as well you are gonna need a front end alignment while that is taking place I strongly recommend you have all the bushings, both shocks, tierod ends checked & replace these items if they need it two NEW front tires will top this off, I know this seems like a lot of stuff to do but you’d be amazed the difference these things will make when it come to gas milage, yet we still not done you exaust system will need some attention if there are leaks they waste fuel everytime you take your foot of the gas and everytime you leave the stoplight even though there is more I’ll close by saying shocks and NEW tires on the rear of the vehicle will also be of a great advantage to your fuel economy as well.
not really!. why dont you do a complete tune-up on the engine, if its still good, that would alone give you better milage and be cheaper then a new motor.

in some situations yes, but not all of the time. i would start out with the routine tune up and air filter and see of that helps.
